Goldsmith’s Cora® Vinca wins Gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing !

After an extensive trial with varieties from all over the world, ‘Cora’ thrived in the extreme tropical heat and high humidity for three summer seasons in Beijing and outlasted its competition, proving to be the best variety to be showcased for the highly telecasted Olympic event. ‘Cora Deep Lavender’ and ‘Cora White’ created a blanket of color displayed in large beds near the Water Cube where Michael Phelps made history winning 8 Gold medals.

The main characteristic that differs this Vinca from the competition is it’s resistance to the disease aerial Phytopthora! ‘Cora’ comes in eight brilliant colors including new pink and punch and a mixture. ‘Cora’ has a uniform habit with long-lasting large flowers that do well in full sun exposure.

Another winner showcased at the Olympics in Beijing was Sparkler™ Cleome. ‘Sparkler Blush’, an All-America Selections Award Winner, and ‘Sparkler White’ were planted in a bed right outside the Bird’s Nest National Stadium. ‘Sparkler’, which can reach a height of 3 ½ - 4 feet, caught the attention of spectators passing by.

Annual Rotary Flower Sale

Goldsmith Seeds has held the Spring Trials event every year since 1965. This event features hundreds of new variety plants that are introduced to the industry. Pictured above is an outdoor display of a cabana that was set up at this year’s Spring Trials. As the event became more popular and grew in size, so did the number of plants. Glenn and Jane Goldsmith, the founders of Goldsmith Seeds and leaders of the Gilroy Rotary at the time, came up with the idea of the flower sale, and it has been an event occurring every year since then.

Half of the proceeds go to Rotary Charities and are available to schools, non-profits, community-based organizations, etc. The other half goes to the Rotary/Goldsmith Scholarship fund, which is given to one or more local high school or junior college students who are going on to study horticulture, floriculture, botany or some related field.

This scholarship is up to $9,000 a year.

The annual event raises more than $50,000 each year - more than five times what was raised 10 years ago!

Buckingham Palace

Goldsmith's "Americana" Geraniums receive the royal treatment, with thousands on display outside Buckingham Palace in England.

Some 14,500 "Americana Red" geraniums from Goldsmith were planted in the extensive flower beds outside Buckingham Palace. "Americana Red" was selected for its superior performance and plant habit. Also clinching their selection was the fact that "Americana Red" matched the precise color of red in the palace guardsmen's uniforms.

"Americana" Geraniums by Goldsmith come in an amazing 13 different colors. The color range adds diversity to the geranium color range, and includes such colors as "Light Pink Splash," "Rose Splash" and "White Splash." "Americanas" are known for their free-flowering, large flower heads that are held above a well-branching plant structure. Heat tolerance is emphasized for added garden performance.
